Hold the explosions: Why smaller is better for your first short film

So you want to make a short film? Congratulations! That’s huge. I’ve had the pleasure of producing several short films in my career and I think it’s a beautiful calling card for any budding filmmaker. That being said, I’ve also read a lot of short scripts… A LOT and I can tell you that most people write their first short film as if they have the budget of a feature. Going too big on your first film can result in overspending, stress and oftentimes doesn’t lead to a great result. 

This is why I always advocate for a very contained story for a director’s first short film. By contained, I mean a story that involves 1 location and 2 actors without any elaborate action. Read: No explosions, no car chases and no fight scenes. Just two actors hashing out a problem. I’m sure you’re saying “But Dominique, you’re stifling my creativity”. Quite the opposite. Nothing forces a filmmaker to be more creative than parameters. You have to put your thinking cap on and figure out how to make the sequence interesting without all the frills. I promise this will be the kindest way to start your directing career (particularly for your bank account).  

I’ve learned all these lessons the hard way and I’m here to share the benefits of working in a smaller sandbox for your first short film. 

Going too big often expands your budget

The very first film I produced was my crash course in film production. I wrote the script without any knowledge of creating a budget and boy did it show when I had to pay the bill. Although I only had two actors, I had so many locations, many of which required permits. That 10-minute short film quickly became an overblown budget of $6000. Looking back, with what I now know as a producer, I could have rewritten that script to be a single location and done the film for less than $1000. Locations add money to a budget very quickly. 

Most locations will ask for a fee and if you live in Vancouver, that fee can be pretty high (upwards of $500 a day). I know a few of you reading this are thinking you would go guerilla-style and not get permits for exterior locations. That comes with its own set of risks and allows for very little control over the location itself. 

You can comfortably step into your role

By starting small, a first-time director can really sink into their role. If you have a million moving parts, you will feel pulled in too many directions at once. If you have a straightforward story to tell, you can put that time into working with your actors, your DP, your production designer and all other heads of departments. Being able to shot list without feeling completely overwhelmed is a gift and a lesson that you will use moving forward in your career. Now is the time to learn to do that well. That way, when you have a stunt-heavy scene or 100 background actors in future projects, you know the basics like the back of your hand. 

You’ll get to know your crew 

When running a skeleton crew, you will get to know each member of the production before you even step on set. If your first film has 25-50 crew members, it will be nearly impossible to get to know each one of them as most of the key roles will be demanding your time. Getting to know crew members is invaluable. When you find the ones you love working with, you will want to keep working with them on future projects. 

You can focus on performance

Performance can make a short film stand out. You can have the best cinematography, production design, wardrobe and locations but if the performances are flat, that is what people will remember. Working on a small project allows you as a director to connect with your actors in both pre-production and on set as this will be the central point of your film. 

It will challenge you to be creative in your storytelling 

It can be deceiving to think that great films lie in the grand gestures but a strong film starts with a strong story. By working within the contained model of a short film, you can focus solely on the story between the two characters. What is happening between them? Are they fighting? Breaking up? Making up? The possibilities are endless.

This project can help secure funding in the future

By showing others what you can accomplish on a shoestring budget, you can convince friends, family and if you’re lucky, investors to put in money for your more expensive short. By doing your initial piece justice, you will show others that they can trust you with larger sums of money. If you fundraise for your first short film and people give you a few thousand dollars each and your film doesn’t turn out, they won’t keep giving you money. It’s better to build a high-quality portfolio first and then ask for those donations. 

If you are still unsure, follow along as I use this exact model in my directing debut. In my upcoming comedy short “Holy Fib” I am simply telling the story of a couple trying to find daycare for their child. 1 location, 2 actors speaking about an issue. Is it elaborate? No. Manageable? Absolutely. Funny? Hopefully. 

The second short film I plan to direct involves stunts and more elaborate set pieces that I hope to raise a sizeable budget for. However, I want to dip my toe in before I have a chance to dive into the deep end. As a producer, I see this as the best way to move forward and sustainably build a directing career. Find your people, build your world, play in the sandbox and make something great. Happy filmmaking!

5 Things to Remember When Planning a Short Film

Whether it’s your 1st or 7th project out of your film production company, planning a short takes a lot of work. Even with experience, you can get so caught up in the logistics that you might forget a few big-ticket items. Here are 5 things to keep in mind when planning to shoot your short film. 

  1. You Will Need More Money Than You Expected 

You’ve set your budget. You’ve booked your gear and your catering and… what’s that? Someone in the set department needs candles for the table? The food order didn’t include the 10 vegan meals needed? Better get your wallet out. These kinds of additional budget items happen on every shoot. Ideally, this will be coming from the vault of money you were able to fundraise from hundreds of generous donors but realistically, on an indie short,  this will probably come from your pocket. This can feel stressful when you’ve already put so much money into the project but it can also be a moment for learning and creativity. 

If you run a film production company or you’re looking to produce or direct your own film, you need to see these asks as opportunities to find a low or no-budget way of handling it- Can you use the candles from another scene? can you add something else to the table that will create dimension? Of course, other areas will require you to pay (food and dietary requirements) and that’s just something that needs to happen. Having extra money in the pool on the day of shooting can help relieve some of these unexpected charges. 

2. Personality Matters When It Comes to Crew

Your first few films will be passion projects until you build out your film production company. They require a lot of hard work from people who aren’t always being paid and oftentimes, crew members wear multiple hats. That is where building a cohesive team really pays off. Having crew members that understand your leadership style and respect all other positions on set is imperative. Egos have no place on a short indie set. Everyone is busting their butt and sleep-deprived. The last thing you need is someone who thinks they are above being kind to the Production Assistant (who is most likely volunteering). Choosing people that work hard yet maintain respect for others will make a tough shoot feel a lot smoother. I have been supremely lucky on my last two shorts, ‘How Tall is Jeffrey?’ and ‘Last Day on Earth’, to be surrounded by the coolest humans in the business. 

Your job as a producer or director is to create an environment for your crew or cast to speak up if they feel that their boundaries are being pushed in any way. This can be an ongoing process but being open to feedback and tough conversations is a good place to start. Setting up these standards will be key should you one day want your own film production company. 

3. Things Will Go Wrong and That’s Okay

You might be like me and you worry about all the things that could go wrong on a shoot. Honestly, I think that’s what makes me a good producer… it’s also the cause of some new grey hairs. Either way, no amount of worrying can predict everything so you need to be prepared to handle situations as they arise. When a crisis happens, it’s your job to help sort it out. Maybe you lost a location, maybe your lead actor is sick. Take a breath, assess the issue in its entirety and start brainstorming solutions. Being a great producer or director does not mean you can anticipate all possible issues (although you will try, believe me). It is having the presence of mind to tackle each problem and find a way to solve it. Sometimes that means knowing who to ask for help, sometimes that means making a million phone calls at 4:55 PM on a Friday before businesses close for the long weekend; it’s all part of the gig. 

4. Take Care of Your Body and Mind

Making a film, of any kind, is stressful. Whether you own a film production company or you are getting a group of friends together, it will be top of mind until it’s complete. The stress of planning a short can really disrupt your sleep cycle, exercise routine and general wellness activities. That’s bound to happen but try and prioritize something for your mental health and wellbeing at least once a day. Maybe that means taking your time with a cup of coffee or reading before you go to bed at night. Whatever wellness means for you, make space for that as best as you can. Most importantly, go easy on yourself. You’re doing your best.

5. This Is Supposed to Be Fun (difficult but fun)

I might be biased, but I think making movies is the coolest job on earth. Yes, it can be very challenging but in the end, if you are getting a chance to bring a story to life that you believe in, then it can be really, really fun. I love being on set. As a producer, this is what you work so hard for; to watch all of your pre-development work come to fruition on shoot days. Of course, there’s lots of work to be done afterwards but that time with your crew and cast should be cherished. Take a moment on the first day of filming to soak it all in. 

Keep these points in mind as you go forward with planning your short. If you are feeling overwhelmed there are plenty of experienced film producers or crew out there that are willing to answer questions. This is just the beginning of your filmmaking career- be patient, be kind to yourself and enjoy the ride.

The Beginner’s Guide to Making a Short Film

A beginner’s filmmaking guide for shooting your first short

 If you have a short film idea and desire to turn it into a reality, then this guide is for you. From writing the script to shooting the film, I’m going to cover the basics of what it takes to make a short film. Not included in the list is the copious amount of coffee and stress walks around the block. Filmmaking is not for the faint of heart but dang if it isn’t one of the best creative pursuits out there. 

Why Make A Short Film?

A short film is an excellent way of demonstrating your filmmaking skills and getting noticed by casting agents, producers and distributors in the industry. It can also be used as a calling card to launch yourself into bigger things: it can lead to feature films, documentaries or even television projects. The best way to get into these industries is through your work, so making an impact with shorts is crucial.

Do Short Films Make Money?

Yes and no. I personally wouldn’t look at making a short film as a way to make money in the short term. However, if you see this as the beginning to your work as a director, screenwriter or producer, down the line, a short film will help you make a career- which hopefully pays the bills (and more!). 

You could make a short and put it up on Youtube or other channels but if you are planning to do the festival run, I would hold off on doing this until after you’ve shown at a few festivals. Oftentimes having your content online hurts your chances of getting accepted into some film festivals. Don’t worry, your grandma can watch it through a private link after it’s done in post.  

So How Do You Make a Short Film?

 1. Get a Script

Whether you want to write it yourself or you want to find someone else to contribute a screenplay, first and foremost, your story is paramount. Do NOT, I repeat, do not choose an epic, period piece that spans 30 minutes for your first short film. It’s tempting. We all want to be the next Oscar winner but trust me, start small. Start with a story so small that you can shoot it in one room with two actors. That’s the sweet spot. I’ve done shorts with multiple exterior locations and gosh do I wish I hadn’t. These locations start to add up quickly and when you shoot exteriors, you end up with a lot of variables that you can’t control. So, heed my warning- start as small as possible. You can make your 3-hour Western after a few films. 

2. Make a Budget

Unless you have your own gear, you plan on shooting in your living room and you don’t need to hire any additional crew, you will probably need a budget. There are a lot of resources and templates available so take your time considering everything you’ll need. There are going to be things you never thought of- have a buffer in your budget just in case. 

A note about budget–  it will always cost more than you think. I remember on my first film, our sound equipment was being buggy and was draining our batteries within minutes. We had to run to the store to buy a large pack of double As. This wasn’t in my budget, and although it was a small expense in the grand scheme of things, it felt huge after spending so much money to even get to our shooting dates. 

If you can fundraise or attract investors, this will be a big win for you so you aren’t doing everything out of pocket. It hurts a lot less when you’re producing with money that isn’t coming directly from your account. 

3. Find Locations

The next step is to find locations that can be used for your film. It's important that these locations are appropriate for your script, so make sure you do some research first. If you're having trouble finding the right location, then search online or ask around at local cinemas and libraries; they may be able to help you find some options near where you live. Put up ads or reach out to friends and family but have this confirmed early. This will save you doing a last-minute scramble as you approach your shoot. Filmmaking is all about planning ahead so try to have a back-up location in case something happens. 

4. Hire Cast & Crew

The cast and crew are very important in any film production, so it's important that you choose them wisely if you want your short to turn out well. The cast should consist of actors who know how to deliver their lines convincingly in front of the camera, and who are comfortable working with each other on set (if there's more than one actor). The crew should consist of people who have worked on films before, or at least have experience working on sets or with cameras; this will ensure that you can focus on your primary role whether that’s directing or producing. At Dream Board Production House, we focus on crew that are kind, know how to be collaborative and generally add to the overall vibe of the set. If you end up working until 4 AM, these are the people you want around you. Leave the egos at the door.

5. The Paperwork

From union papers to permits, you might need to reach out to someone with experience in these areas to help you finalize your necessary documents. Sure, some people go without them but I’ve never been one to take that risk. Not having the appropriate paperwork could mean that you are not allowed to shoot when needed or you may face a fine. Might as well just go ahead and get it all above board. 

This is meant to be an intro guide to what the filmmaking process looks like. I can tell you that each one of these points has about a hundred tasks that need completion in order to be ready to shoot. Having an experienced producer on set is a great way to help mitigate the monumental to-do list that awaits you for your first short film. Luckily, people in this industry are pretty great. 

Making a short film is a rewarding experience. The combination of creative storytelling, collaboration with coworkers and the opportunity for creative self-expression is difficult to match. But filmmaking isn't easy. It's very time-consuming, from getting funding and writing a script, to pre-production, production and post-production. That being said, it’s totally worth it.  If you enjoy storytelling and want to be involved creatively in the process from conception to completion, then making a short film could be just the right project for you. How to Outline Your Screenplay

Outlining your script can be a huge time saver. I break down my process on how to build your story step-by-step.

I’ve heard of people who successfully finish a screenplay without an outline. I’ve also heard some people say that Bigfoot exists. I’ve yet to see either in person. The thought of writing a script without any sort of roadmap sounds like walking into an unknown forest at night without a headlamp; possible to find your way out but 1000 times harder.

A teacher once told me I always look for the path of least resistance. I agree. He actually said it as an insult but I’m choosing to see the bright side. I like to make things easier for myself and you should too. Writing is hard enough as is. Creating an outline, even the skeleton of one, can make things a little simpler.

Every writer seems to have their own process for outlining their story. Through trial and error, I finally feel I have a step-by-step guide to creating a screenplay. Of course, this came at the expense of 2 scripts that were started and scrapped because I couldn’t figure out the ending. That was a hard lesson to learn; know your ending before you start writing. It can help guide you through the most difficult sections to write.

Let’s say an idea hits you, I liken it to a lightning bolt that strikes me directly in the head (minus the negative connotations of such an event). I see an image or a concept that will be the basis for my screenplay. I immediately want to start writing it. But my trusty planning brain tells me that is cruel punishment I don’t deserve, so I begin the outlining process instead.

Two things to keep in mind before you begin: don’t judge any of your initial instincts and don’t get too attached to any aspect you write down. Being flexible in writing is important so you don’t get pulled down a rabbit hole that has a dead end. Sometimes writing means letting go of ideas you like because they don’t work.

Step 1: Write a bad logline first

A logline is a 1 to 2 sentence high-level description of a script.

IMDB’s logline for JAWS is “When a killer shark unleashes chaos on a beach community off Long Island, it's up to a local sheriff, a marine biologist, and an old seafarer to hunt the beast down”. Pretty dang catchy.

(This was the friendliest image I could find that alluded to the movie JAWS without actually showing a shark. They scare me.)

People teach entire courses on loglines so I won’t go into too much detail. Don’t use character names and only mention key aspects of the story. As you don’t really know your story yet, this shouldn’t be too difficult. Know it will change down the line.

For this exercise I might write: A girl and her dog set out on an adventure to find the girl’s missing mother.

Step 2: Write down everything you imagine for this script (good and bad ideas)

This part is a lot of fun. I tend to do it in bullet points. With my logline as a reference, I start to brainstorm all possibilities; locations, characters, maybe a few scenes, endings, pivotal moments, changes in character. I could have the girl fight a bear, the dog chases a squirrel and gets separated from the girl, the girl realizes the importance of family. Keep going until you’re out of points.

Step 3: Start elaborating

Next, you start elaborating on the main aspects of the story.

  • Write down your main characters: You don’t need names yet but you should have a general idea of their traits. Sometimes I write them as the role that they will play in the story, “Antagonist”, “The Comic Relief”. You don’t need all the details here, that will come later. This is to determine who your key players are. I should remind you, these characters might change. You might decide you have too many sidekicks or that one of your characters isn’t different enough from the main character. This is why being flexible is important.

  • Write down the general story: Again, no specific details required, unless you have them of course. This is a chance for you to see the flow of the story. It can be very simple. Girl’s mother goes missing, girl leaves house with dog to find her, girl meets new friend, they have adventures, girl finds out new friend is not a friend, girl is lost without dog, girl is hungry and injured, dog finds girl, girl recovers, girl and dog find her mother.

Step 4: Get into the nitty-gritty details

This is where you start to dig in.

  • Characters: Start exploring who they are. I don’t ever get too far into what a character looks like unless it specifically drives the story. For example: if they always wear clothes that have holes and tears, you might gather that they don’t care about appearance. This could be telling of their personality and how they interact with people around them. What I want to know is:

    • Are they funny? Or serious?

    • How did they grow up? Was their family tight-knit? Did they struggle for money? How do they handle money now? Do they spend too much? Do they count every penny?

    • Who are the people closest to them?

    • What do they want most in the world?

    • Do they have anything from their past that they wish they could change?

    • How are they with food? Do they stuff themselves at every meal? Do they take tiny, precise bites?

    • What are their biggest fears?

    These kinds of questions are important for shaping a character. These prompts will most likely have answers that arise in your script in some way. For example, if they are visiting with their family as an adult, they might see familiar dynamics playing out from their childhood but can finally stand up to their father rather than let him railroad the conversation.

    This section is where you will start to write down supporting characters as well. You don’t need to explore their entire backstories, just who they are, their characteristics and why they are important to the main characters.

  • Story Summary: Here, you will want to write down as much as possible about what is going to happen. Do this in paragraph form (we will be doing a scene-by-scene breakdown later). You have character names now, start using them. Give as much detail as you can. I don’t mean “There is a turquoise room with a beige lampshade on the spare table”. I mean, “Tiffany Anderson lives an ordinary life. She goes to school, comes home, makes good grades. Then one day, her mother is late to pick her up. She decides to walk home but when she gets there, she finds the house has been emptied. Everything is gone, except for her trusty dog, Maple”.

    Keep going like this until you have the whole tale. You don’t need every scene but the most important parts are the beginning, middle and end. That you should try to figure out. If you have some gaps, don’t worry. We will figure those out shortly.

Step 5: Write your beat sheet

This is another one of those steps that could get its own post. A beat sheet pinpoints the key moments in your script. There are various methods to writing your beat sheet. I follow Blake Snyder’s. (Suggested reading: Blake Snyder’s ‘Save the Cat’ outlines what each point is and why it is needed). If you haven’t used one before, make sure you read the descriptions of what each point entails and why it is necessary for moving the story forward.

Snyder’s sheet gets into specifics: Opening Image, Inciting Incident, Midpoint etc. I find these milestones extremely helpful in making sure that I’m on track with my story.

Sure, there are arguments for and against using beat sheets. I don’t think everyone needs to use one. But I think everyone should learn what they are and how it applies to writing stories. By no means do I follow beats down to the specific page counts but I know within the first quarter of my script, I’d like to set up the world and have something substantial happen that kickstarts the character’s journey.

Step 6: Write one line about each scene

Some people call this the 40 point beat sheet. I don’t want to put a number on it. I like to write out each scene of my script in a bullet point so I know what might be missing and where it’s all going. I include every scene that would get its own scene heading- even if it’s just someone walking on a sidewalk. For my girl and her dog saga, I might write:

  • Tiffany goes to school.

  • We see Tiffany at school. No one talks to her.

  • She comes home, her mother has a snack waiting for her. We meet Maple.

  • Tiffany and her mother watch a movie. Hint at what happened to her dad?

  • Tiffany is in class. She gets yelled at by a teacher.

  • Tiffany waits outside of school. All the other kids get picked up.

  • Tiffany walks home.

  • Tiffany enters her house. Maple is sitting at the door whimpering. Everything is gone- Mother not found.

I would keep going like this until I hit every point and got to the end. Now you can see it all laid out. Maybe it seems like things are rushing in the middle. Maybe the end needs a little more space between the final showdown and wrap-up. Honestly, these kinds of observations will come in time. The more you do it, the better you’ll get at identifying what is missing from your story. Try reading these points out loud to a willing participant as if you are describing an entire film. If you are getting caught up too often because you’ve forgotten a point or something is not making sense, it might need another revision.

Step 7: WRITE!

You must be relieved. It’s time to put pen to paper, or more accurately, fingertips to keys.

I use the software, Fade In, to write my screenplays. I find it intuitive and easy to figure out. Find one that works for you and make sure you check out basic formatting. Most people won’t even read the first page of a script if they see blatant formatting errors.

Focus on the scene bullets you carefully wrote out and let those be your guide.They might seem vague at first but they will allow for some magic to happen, where a character shows up that wasn’t expected and crashes the party.

Writing is tough and incredible and rewarding.
